Plastic Free July® is a worldwide initiative, organized by the Plastic Free Foundation. Originating in 2011, it’s a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution – so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities.

The movement invites millions around the globe to join forces in addressing plastic pollution and to say no to disposable plastics. For instance, avoiding bottled soft drinks and bottled water, refusing pre-packaged produce, and choosing reusable coffee cups are some of the small steps and choices we can make that will have a big impact on our environment.

At B2Gold’s Otjikoto Mine in Namibia, our environmental team made waves throughout July, organizing impactful events both at the mine and in schools across Otjiwarongo and Otavi. The focus was to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of single-use plastics and inspire communities to embrace eco-friendly choices.

In collaboration with the Erongo Drum Recycling, B2Gold Namibia contributed colour-coded recycling bins to schools reinforcing our commitment to a cleaner, greener future. Recycling Forum of Namibia provided the educational mascot, Rubbish Ronnie, who entertained the audience during all the events.

The movement has inspired 100+ million participants in 190 countries. By making a small change we will collectively make a massive difference to our communities. We can choose to refuse single-use plastics and find great alternatives that can become new habits forever.
